How do I judge a daycare's safety record?
The most meaningful indicator of daycare safety is a consistent record of compliance across multiple inspections over time, not a single number. While various platforms assign safety scores or ratings, understanding what goes into those scores helps you make a more informed decision than relying on the number alone.
A strong safety record looks like a provider that has been inspected multiple times over several years with few or no Type A citations. Type A citations represent immediate risks to children, so their absence across multiple visits is a genuinely positive signal. The occasional Type B citation for a minor administrative or maintenance issue is normal and, when promptly corrected, actually demonstrates that the oversight system is working and the provider is responsive.
Be cautious about interpreting a perfect score as the only acceptable outcome. A provider that has been licensed for ten years and has undergone many inspections with zero citations of any kind has an excellent record. But a newer provider with only one or two inspections and no citations simply has a shorter track record, and that limited history means less certainty rather than guaranteed quality. Look at the volume and span of inspections alongside the results.
Context matters when evaluating citations. A facility cited for a missing fire extinguisher that was replaced the same day presents a very different risk profile than a facility cited for repeated supervision failures over multiple visits. The type of violation, whether it was corrected promptly, and whether similar issues recur are all more informative than a raw count of citations.
When comparing providers, look for facilities where the overall trend shows stable or improving compliance. A provider that had some issues three years ago but has had clean inspections since may have made meaningful operational improvements. Conversely, a provider with an increasing number of citations over recent visits may be trending in the wrong direction regardless of their historical score.
