California daycare inspection data: what we have assessed so far
Citations found in the state inspection reports we have assessed, with how much of the state that covers.
What we have assessed so far
As of November 2, 2026, we have assessed 93 of the 288 inspection reports on file, covering 46 of the 13,331 California providers we list (0.3%).

Assessed reports are dated October 28, 2021 to June 3, 2026.
13,285 California providers we list have not been assessed yet. For them, nothing on this page says anything either way: a provider missing from these counts has simply not had a report assessed by us. Check the state's own record for any provider you are considering.
Coverage is still too small to describe California childcare as a whole. The counts below describe only the reports we have assessed so far, and they will change as we assess more.
Citations by visit type
45 citations were recorded across the 93 assessed reports. Complaint investigations and follow-up visits are not a random sample of providers, so these counts are not comparable between visit types.
| Visit type | Reports assessed | Citations recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Facility evaluation (routine inspection) | 70 | 30 |
| Complaint investigation | 23 | 15 |

Assessed reports by county
Counties are ordered by how many reports we have assessed there, not by any measure of care. A county with more citations here usually just has more assessed reports.
| County | Providers listed | With an assessed report | Reports assessed | Citations recorded |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alameda | 689 | 46 | 93 | 45 |
How these numbers are made
- Inspection reports come from the state licensing agency (California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division). We count a report as assessed when we have read it into structured data: processing finished, the result lists the report's citations (an empty list when it records none), and the extraction passed our confidence check. Every other report on file counts as not assessed.
- Counts cover the California providers our directory lists, which leaves out facilities whose license is closed, revoked, pending or inactive.
- A citation is one entry in a report's list of citations. Codes are shown as the report wrote them. We do not assign our own severity, and a citation's later correction or appeal is not reflected here.
- We do not publish percentages of providers with or without citations, averages, or rankings of providers or counties. The reports we have assessed are not a random sample, so those figures would mislead.
- Figures come from our live database and are refreshed at most hourly; the date at the top is when they were last computed.
The official record is the source of truth. Look up any provider on the California Department of Social Services site or read the Title 22 licensing regulations.
Look up providers and their own records
Each provider page shows that provider's inspection reports and whether we have assessed them.
